Fertility Evaluation Q&A

What determines a diagnosis of infertility?

Infertility is generally diagnosed when you’ve been trying to get pregnant for one year without any success. If you’re 35 or older, infertility is diagnosed after six months of serious trying.

Approximately 10-15% of all couples experience infertility and benefit from fertility evaluations.

What causes infertility?

In about one-third of cases, issues with the woman, such as anovulation or scar tissue, cause infertility. In another third, infertility has to do with the man’s sperm quality. In the last third, infertility results from both partners or is undetermined.

In any of these cases, couples can go on to have a healthy pregnancy and a happy family. Interior Women’s Health is here to help.

What is involved in a fertility evaluation?

The doctors at Interior Women’s Health offer a number of screenings to help get at the root cause of the trouble a couple is having conceiving. Women undergo tests including:

  • Blood tests to check for hormone issues or infection
  • In-house ultrasound to look for uterine or other organ abnormalities
  • Ovulation evaluation via ultrasound
  • Pelvic exam
  • Hysterosalpingogram to look for blocked fallopian tubes

The doctors can also evaluate the male partner’s sperm quality and quantity. The doctors sit down with you to discuss lifestyle issues that may also be compromising your ability to get pregnant. Lifestyle concerns that can contribute to infertility include undue stress, overweight or obesity, or drug use.

What treatments are recommended after a fertility evaluation?

The expert fertility counseling offered at Interior Women’s Health offers every possible way to help you conceive. Counseling may include information about optimal nutrition, supplements, weight loss (if you’re overweight), and fertility tracking.

The doctors also work with outside infertility specialists to help address your infertility issues. If you are infertile due to ovulation issues, you may benefit from prescription hormones or other medications to help you release a viable egg (ovulate).

If you have an issue such as scar tissue, fibroids, or endometriosis interfering with your fertility, you may require minimally invasive surgery. The surgery preserves your reproductive organs while removing the offending tissue.

Some couples require intrauterine insemination or in vitro fertilization to successfully achieve pregnancy. The doctors at Interior Women’s Health work with experts in Seattle when you need specialized fertility care.
