What is abnormal uterine bleeding, and how can NovaSure help?
Every woman has a unique experience of menstruation, but for some, heavy or prolonged bleeding can change the shape of your days and nights.
If you experience any of the following, you may have abnormal uterine bleeding (menometrorrhagia):
- Bleeding through a pad or tampon more than once an hour
- Bleeding that lasts longer than seven days
- Painful periods
- Irregular menstrual cycles
- Bleeding between periods or after sex
Menstrual bleeding might be inconvenient or uncomfortable, but it shouldn’t cause you to miss out on activities or be painful. NovaSure is an outpatient procedure that reduces menstrual bleeding by eliminating a portion of your uterine lining.
What happens during NovaSure treatment?
NovaSure is an endometrial ablation treatment that uses radiofrequency energy to damage the interior lining of the uterus. This thins the uterine tissue that thickens and sheds during your menstrual cycle.
A thinner uterine lining means less tissue to bleed each cycle. NovaSure treatment can dramatically reduce your menstrual flow and, in turn, lessen the symptoms of heavy bleeding.
Your practitioner administers local anesthesia to help you remain comfortable. They then insert the NovaSure wand into your vagina and past your cervix.
The wand then deploys a flexible mesh that your practitioner guides to the internal surfaces of your uterus, ensuring thorough coverage. The platform then delivers carefully controlled radiofrequency energy to the mesh, which damages the tissue lining your uterus.
What is the recovery process like after NovaSure?
NovaSure is an in-office procedure, and the active delivery of radiofrequency energy only takes around five minutes. You can return home after your visit.
You may experience some nausea, vomiting, and cramping in the hours after your procedure. Most women can resume normal activities after a day or so. You should expect some discharge as your body continues to shed the damaged tissue.
Your discharge will likely be bloody for a few days, then will turn more watery. This process can take around a month, and the full healing process can take around three months.
It is important to note that NovaSure is only suitable for women who are certain they do not want to become pregnant. Altering your uterine lining will make a successful pregnancy very unlikely, so be prepared to use birth control for the remainder of your reproductive years.
